The mission of the Foundation Fighting Blindness is to find the causes, treatments and ultimately cures for retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration and related eye diseases.

We work towards this goal by:

  • Funding sight-saving research at universities and hospitals across Canada
  • Promoting public awareness of the challenges and societal costs of living with vision loss – and of the promise of emerging treatments!
  • Offering innovative education programs to families across Canada affected by vision loss

Mission Spending

Our ability to achieve our mission is growing quickly – thanks to your support. This chart illustrates the growth in sight-saving research funding over our history. Since our inception, we have invested more than $21 million in sight saving research at Canadian hospitals and universities.

Our investment in research and education has grown steadily from $15,000 in 1974, to $712,667 in 1994 to $1,480,617.

In 2011, the Foundation Fighting Blindness invested $3.6 million in research. We currently have ongoing commitments to 19 multi-year research initiatives across Canada supporting leading-edge research to help save, and restore sight. Highlights include:

  • Five new research operating grants that were awarded funding in 2011, a commitment of nearly 1 million dollars to new research over the next three years.
  • Five research funding partnerships that were created with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canada’s most powerful health research agency. These critical research partnerships are translating scientific findings into life-changing treatments. In these partnerships, every FFB donation is matched by nearly five dollars from our partners.
