Summary: When living with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), it’s important to make sure you are seeing the right eye care specialists to get the best possible support and information you deserve. This talk explains who you should be seeing and why. As well, it will give guidelines on what ongoing care and referrals are available to you (i.e. genetic testing, counseling, low vision specialists, research trials). Lastly, an update will be provided on the expansion of the FFB Patient Registry and why it’s important to be a part of it.

This talk will give the latest update on: 1) gene therapy - LCA Phase II results; 2) pharmaceutical therapy (neurotrophic agents) – RP Phase II results; 3) stem cell research outlook; and 4) electronic prosthetic (artificial retina) trial results.

Inspiring Keynote Speaker - Norma Bastidas
Summary: Norma is the second person in history to run seven of the planet's most unforgiving environments on seven separate continents in one year. Dubbed the 777 Run for Sight, Norma leveraged her incredible journey to help raise money for the Foundation Fighting Blindness; and awareness of her son's battle with vision loss. She believes in being a strong model for both her sons, proving that even the most difficult challenges can be conquered with perseverance, hard work and a positive attitude. In 2010 Norma is planning the 771 Climb for Sight, 7 summits, 7 continents, 1 record. She will climb the 7 highest peaks on 7 continents, including Everest, in 1 year - making her the fastest female to ascend all 7 as well as run a marathon just before the climb.

Inspiring Keynote Speaker – Heather Challmie
Summary: Heather, who has retinitis pigmentosa, works as a personal chef and is drawing on her love of food and wine pairing to write a book. She also works to raise awareness of RP among the media and public and is a volunteer with Comic Vision, a cross country comedy tour in support of the FFB. Heather is encouraged by the research progress in recent years to find treatments and cures for retinal diseases. She encourages others to have hope and take action.
